About USA Dance, Inc.
USA Dance, Inc. was originally formed 60 years ago as United States Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association, Inc., USABDA as an acronym. During the early years the organization consisted primarily of a small number of members in the New York & D.C. areas, and small numbers on the West Coast. In the late 1970s, actions were initiated to expand our organization to other parts of the country and to create a national organization. In 1985 USABDA reorganized was granted tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service. Bylaws were formed as a national organization with a regional and chapter structure.
In 2005, a corporate resolution was filed and recognized which changed our name to USA Dance, Inc. We focus on promoting the growth of all styles of ballroom dance, both competitive and social dancing. This includes a program that creates and supports chapters in various states. In addition, we organize educational programs among the public about the health benefits of ballroom dance and Dancesport, the competitive form of ballroom dancing. These programs emphasize the physical, mental and social benefits of dancing, and include the enhancement of dance.
Ballroom dance improves cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, flexibility, and posture. Pivots, spirals, lunges, and chasses all contribute to muscle enhancement, calorie burning, and stamina. As the body develops, dancers are also sharing upbeat music and dance figures with friendly people which reduces stress and catalyzes the formation of new friendships. Recent studies have concluded that ballroom dance, as well as other dance, music, etc. can help prevent the early onset of dementia in individuals. Mind-to-body coordination, spatial relation, and floor-craft management all improve cognitive ability.
In our organization, we are extremely fortunate to have a multitude of volunteers, board leaders, and dancers who love ballroom dance, appreciate the romance, and enjoy the health benefits that ballroom dance brings to their lives. We continue to focus our activities on various programs to enable members to have fun dancing, achieve their dance goals, maintain physical and cognitive well-being, and to promote and expand the art, sport, and the passion of ballroom dance.
